2024 Year in Review: Highlights from Western Washington Clean Cities

Coalition News: WWCC’s Year of Impact and Progress

2024 was a full year for the Western Washington Clean Cities Coalition (WWCC). From hosting events to advancing collaboration across the state, we’ve been part of significant strides in clean transportation. Here’s a look at our highlights, accomplishments, and parallel successes shaping the future of clean transportation in Washington.

Engaging Events: Building Connections and Sharing Knowledge

This year, WWCC hosted several events to connect stakeholders, industry leaders, and community members.

Our first-ever Lunch & Learn in Centralia brought together over 25 participants from across 10 regions in WA/OR to discuss fleet practices and emerging policies affecting the industry. The Spring Into Workplace Charging Webinar Series supported the EMPOWER Workplace Charging project, providing essential resources for businesses exploring electric vehicle (EV) adoption. An event partnering with Truck Shop Event focused on clean technology advancements for freight and commercial trucking industries.

Additionally, the PFMA Washington Meetings allowed WWCC to partner with public fleet leaders, addressing their challenges and exploring innovative solutions. At GTSE, WWCC hosted a Stakeholder Meet-Up, where over 30 stakeholders from across the region and abroad exchanged ideas and built partnerships. At the Green Transportation Summit and Expo (GTSE), WWCC hosted key sessions, facilitating collaboration and showcasing innovations in clean transportation. Finally a Ride and Drive event in Vancouver allowed attendees to experience Battle Motors firsthand, demonstrating the potential of zero-emission vehicles.

Projects: Driving Forward Key Initiatives

WWCC celebrated the launch of the new EMPOWER website, enhancing access to workplace charging resources and tools for businesses. The People of Color in Green Spaces Program continued its efforts to promote diversity and equity in the green sector, with initiatives extending through 2024. On a national level, WWCC participated in the Clean Cities & Communities National Meeting, reflecting on our contributions and showcasing leadership in sustainable transportation.

Membership Highlights: Celebrating Our Partners

WWCC members have achieved remarkable milestones in 2024. AAA Washington, ChargePoly, and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency were spotlighted for their contributions to clean transportation. ConMet celebrated 60 years of innovation and was honored with the DTNA Award for 2023 Performance. DHL deployed 50 Orange EV yard trucks, with plans to add 50 more, while Sawatch Labs led critical efforts in advancing commercial EV transitions by partnering with WEX.

Community and Regional Developments

Statewide, WWCC’s efforts were complemented by significant regional advancements. King County Metro broke ground on an electric bus charging hub in Tukwila, a major step in public transit electrification. The City of Vancouver, WA, passed housing and transit-friendly policies, furthering sustainable urban development. At the Port of Tacoma, operations transitioned to renewable diesel, establishing a strong regional standard for clean fuel usage.

Clean Fuels and Program Successes

Several grant and funding opportunities supported clean transportation projects, including Ecology’s Zero-Emission School Bus Grant Program, the $5 Million Clean Bus Planning Awards Program, and federal tax credits for clean vehicles. The $500 million Renew America’s Schools Program also played a key role in advancing clean energy initiatives in schools. Furthermore, the Washington EV Charging Program expanded EV infrastructure, investing in communities to ensure a reliable statewide charging network.

Spotlight on Programs

In addition to these successes, several programs made significant impacts in 2024. Seattle City Light’s E-Fleet Program advanced the adoption of electric fleets in the region. The EMPOWER Workplace Charging Initiatives supported EV workplace charging across Western Washington. Meanwhile, Ecology’s Clean Ports Program continued to enhance port sustainability.

Looking Ahead

Together with our members, stakeholders, and community partners, the region has achieved significant milestones in clean fuels, fleet electrification, and sustainability initiatives. As we move into 2025, WWCC is committed to building on this momentum and driving impactful projects that lead us closer to a cleaner, greener future.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to lead the charge toward clean transportation!
